The project POSITIF (Policy-based Security Tools and Framework) is funded by the European Commission under contract IST-2002-002314, with a total foreseen cost of 3.675.200 € and an EC contribution of 2.550.000 €. The main goal of the project is to offer automatic tools to support security managers in protecting networked infrastructures and applications. POSITIF started on February 1, 2004, and is expected to complete on May 2007. The ideas and solutions developed by POSITIF will then be available as open-source and commercial products.
POSITIF uses a formal approach to describe the system to be protected, the security policy to be enforced and the security capabilities available. A set of tools will then verify the policy's coherence, create the proper configuration of the security elements and apply it. You can read more about the motivation for using this approach.
The partners of the project include research institutions, user representatives and industrial companies that work together towards making the vision of POSITIF come true and demonstrate in three reference installations the effectiveness of the POSITIF framework.
